In a world where men wage wars and rage online, how can men love? Heated Rivalry poses this question via two professional hockey players who must learn to see through their fears, nationalities, and cultural differences and into each other’s hearts. Adapting Rachel Reid’s novel, writer-director Jacob Tierney elevates television romance by artfully balancing big themes with complex—and steamy—sexuality. The Canadian drama series stormed HBO Max and our cultural landscape with performances that catapulted its lead actors into stardom: the interior, autistic Shane played by Hudson Williams and the fiery, tortured Ilya played by Connor Storrie, who delivers consummate Russian he learned in weeks. In the pressure cooker of the closet, their affair transforms from simmering lust into overflowing love, the force of which they fear might destroy their families, friendships, and careers. But the bravery of another player, Francois Arnaud’s Scott Hunter, stirs their courage—and ours. Heated Rivalry inspired legions of fans yearning to see authentic connection and non-toxic masculinity on television. Their fandom inspired gay athletes to come out, boosted hockey sales, and dispelled Hollywood’s limiting beliefs about the value of diverse stories. For showing how we can overcome our worst fears and “go to the cottage,” Heated Rivalry has earned a Peabody.
